How to Choose the Right Elective Courses in College

How to Choose the Right Elective Courses in College Choosing the Right Elective Courses in College In high school, students dont get to choose their classes for the most part. Although there are elective courses, many students choose based on what fits into their schedule or what they need to satisfy college admissions. However, once students arrive at university, they will be able to choose from a plethora of courses that satisfy their elective and general education requirements. This is the chance students have been waiting for; they get actually to choose what they are going to learn about. Thus, its important for students to choose elective classes they’re interested in, and that will help them expand their personal knowledge of either their major or another topic of interest succeed in your college courses with the help of one of our experienced Orange County college tutors. 1.   Think outside the box Students are encouraged to choose an elective course that takes them outside of their comfort zone. Perhaps the student has always wanted to learn how to make pottery or has always been fascinated by astronomy. They may be, say, a business major, but they have an opportunity in their first two years to think outside the box and learn something different. College is an opportunity for students to expand their personal knowledge base and also enjoy developing new skills and making new discoveries. Students who limit themselves to something that only fits into their schedule often find that they are not that engaged in their elective courses. 2. Counterbalance the stress of general ed courses Students are encouraged to think about how they can create a work-life balance when they choose elective courses. For example, if a student is taking two business admin courses and a science lab they may find theyre spending most of the week with their head in a book. It can be beneficial for students to have a creative or athletic outlet during a tough semester. For instance, students could choose their fourth class to be drawing and painting, weightlifting, or yoga. This is a major counterbalance to reading and writing intensive courses that keep stress high and deadlines tight. In fact, students who have a fun elective course often perform better in their general ed and major field of study classes (READ: 5 Reasons to Avoid Cramming For a Test). 3. Explore potential majors Many students dont know specifically what they want to major in their first or second year of college. Elective courses provide an excellent opportunity for students to discover what they might do as a potential career. Some students are pretty sure theyre going to major in a particular topic, but when they take their first course they find that they dont want to spend 30 years focused on that particular subject. Elective units provide students with a valuable opportunity to explore potential careers. 4. Try an internship Another great option is for students to complete a summer internship. This gives students an on-the-job experience to help them understand what their daily life will be like once they graduate from college. Because students are not paid for the majority of internships, its important they receive college credit and stay on track towards graduation as they complete their work training. 5.   Improve social circumstances The majority of college level courses encourage students to work solo or with just one or two other people. However, a great many jobs require people to work as a team and problem-solve together. Thus, its important that students have some social education while in school. Many elective classes contain field trips, group projects, or community involvement as part of the overall curriculum. This is a great opportunity for students to learn how to work as a team and develop career skills. Additionally, students new to college can use their elective classes to study in a more social environment where they can develop long-lasting friendships that help improve the overall university experience. Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery

Healthy Options When Ordering Food Delivery Photo Via: Pixabay.com 1. Salad It’s an age-old option for a reason â€" salad is easily one of the healthiest options on most menus. That being said, don’t fall victim to the salad trap. Many individuals assume that a salad is always healthy, but dressing can ensure that’s not the case. Between fries and a vat of Caesar dressing, you’re likely eating more calories by choosing a salad drowning in dressing. So, in these cases, it typically makes more sense to order your dressing on the side to ensure your salad is actually a healthy choice. 2. Tofu Vegetarians typically have a small selection on each menu that they order off of, but even if you aren’t a vegetarian, you should consider taking a look at these selections. Typically, vegetarian options, such as tofu, will actually save you a large number of calories and are just as filling. One of the biggest areas in which this is relevant is with Chinese food. Rather than ordering orange chicken, which is deep-fried and extremely unhealthy, tofu options can give you just as much flavor with far fewer calories to worry about. 3. Lean Meats In this same line of thinking, you should also consider eating lean meats rather than red meats with a lot of fat. While you may be craving a fattening, greasy cheeseburger, it’s certainly not the healthiest item on the menu, so choosing a chicken sandwich instead can help to save calories. You can also choose fish options, tofu or any other leaner meat than ground beef. Just make sure that when you choose lean meats, you are choosing grilled options, as crispier options are typically deep-fried and therefore unhealthy alternatives that you’ll want to stay as far away from as possible! 4. Small Portions The smaller the portions, the more likely you are to have a healthy meal. That being said, this doesn’t mean that a small side of fries will be as healthy as a small side salad, which seems like common sense, but in some instances, the appearance of food can be deceiving. This is why you should always take a look at the calorie counts on the menu. For this reason, make sure you consider smaller portions of fast food, and perhaps several of the healthier options, to ensure you are full but that you are also choosing healthier items in your food selection. 5. Different Sides Half the battle when ordering food is combating the awful, unhealthy sides that are available to you in fast food. Rather than adding fries, mozzarella sticks or onion rings to your order, opt for the healthier alternatives. For instance, rather than fries, add a side of apple slices to your order. Or rather than onion rings, get a small side salad. Remember that there are a million other options to choose from, not just in entrées, but also in sides, so there is always a healthier choice on the menu that you are able to choose. 6. Fewer Carbs Last, but certainly not least, you should always choose fewer carbs rather than more carbs, as these can account for a large amount of the calories you consume in fast food. For instance, ordering a burrito is a healthier choice if served over brown rice rather than on a flour tortilla. Some individuals choose to order hamburgers without the bun or to have a sandwich in a lettuce wrap rather than on two pieces of bread. Some individuals also hollow out the bread used to make their sandwiches in order to remove some of the calories there within. Food delivery is certainly a fantastic invention when you’re not in the mood to cook, but it’s a bit more difficult when considering your need for healthy food options. For this reason, the above six options are a great starting point to consider when looking for healthier options in food delivery. However, make sure you take a close look at the menu at each place you order from, getting a full overview of the menu rather than reverting back to your unhealthy favorites every time.

To Your Health! The 5 Most Useful Languages to Learn for Medicine

To Your Health! The 5 Most Useful Languages to Learn for Medicine The 5 Most Useful Languages to Learn for Medicine Its the stuff of nightmares. You dont feel well, and you know you need to see a doctor. But when you get there, everyone is speaking a strange language you dont understand. To make matters worse, no one seems to understand what youre saying. For countless patients, this nightmare scenario is a reality. While many hospitals and clinics have translators or translation hotlines, accessing these essential tools takes valuable time.Plus, having to communicate through an intermediary inherently ups the chances of miscommunication, putting peoples lives at greater risk.If saving lives and improving peoples health isnt a good  reason to start learning a foreign language, we dont know what is.But the question remains: What are the  most useful languages  for a scenario like the above?Well, there are plenty of useful languages that could apply. There are some that are  best for business  and work in general.  The most common languages  are useful for their sheer number of speakers. However, when de ciding which language to learn  for medicine, whether its for your own medical practice or a job as a medical worker in a specific setting, there are some factors youll need to take into consideration.Heres what you need to know when selecting the most useful language for your and your patients purposes. What Factors to Consider When Deciding What Language Is Most Useful for Your Medical Practice or JobThe first factor to consider is the region in which you intend to work or practice. Since each region has different demographics, region influences how frequently youll encounter patients who speak different languages and dictates which languages are most common. If youre in the U.S., for more information on what languages are spoken in your region, you might want to check MLA Language Map Data Center. While theres an unfortunate lack of more recent data, regional pockets of foreign languages usually remain somewhat consistent since immigrants are often drawn to areas with other immi grants from their homelands.Next, you might want to consider your specialty. Some conditions are more common in certain ethnic groups. For instance, if you want to specialize in Tay-Sachs disease, which is most common among Ashkenazi Jews and French Canadians, you might benefit from learning Hebrew, Russian, Yiddish and/or French. Finally, consider what you hope to accomplish. For instance, if you want to help under-served communities, you might consider selecting a language that, though widely spoken, isnt as widely studied. If your main goal is being able to help as many patients as possible, you might on the other hand choose from the most widely spoken languages. The 5 Most Useful Languages to Learn for MedicineFor the purposes of this list, weve combined data from Zocdocâ€"a resource dedicated to helping medical professionals grow their practices that uses their own data gathered from appointment bookings and searchesâ€"with additional resources to assess which languages are part icularly useful. While Zocdocs useful languages dont exactly represent the most widely spoken languages in the United States, there are other factors that can contribute to which languages patients want doctors to speak. For instance, many non-native English speakers are fluent enough that they dont require doctors who speak their native language. Similarly, some patients may have a trusted friend or family member who can come along to translate. The results could also be influenced by which demographics are most likely to use Zocdoc. Also, as the languages below mainly take into account factors that are relevant for medicine in the United States, you may need to consider outside factors if youre planning on working somewhere else.No matter where youre planning on working, though, you can start learning most of the languages on the list below (as well as several other popular world languages) on FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videosâ€"like news, movie trailers, commercials and insp iring talksâ€"and turns them into personalized language lessons.Check out the Health and Lifestyle category for videos about health care, nutrition, exercise and more. Learning through authentic videos means youll be experiencing the language from the same perspective as your patients, thereby making it easier for you to connect with them from a common point of understanding. Now lets look at the useful languages below.EnglishBy and large, English is still the main language used in medicine in the United States. And it makes senseâ€"according to the census data, over 230 million Americans spoke exclusively English at home. While another 60 million spoke a language other than English at home, the vast majority of these people spoke English well. So it should come as no surprise that Zocdocs research  indicates that a whopping 99.23% of searches on Zocdoc were for English-speaking doctors. So if you want to work or practice in the U.S. and arent fluent in English, this is a great reason to master the language.SpanishIn 2016, the United States Census Bureau estimated that 40 million residents speak Spanish at home, making it the second most widely spoken language in the United States. Because the Spanish language is so widespread in the United States, its relevant for any medical professional. However, its particularly relevant in areas with large Hispanic populations.According to Pew Research Center, the states with the largest Hispanic populations are California, Texas and Florida. With 15 million Hispanic residents, California alone hosts over 25% of the nations Hispanic population. However, Hispanic residents also make up a significant percentage of residents in several other states. For instance, more than a quarter of the population of New Mexico, California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada are Hispanic. With growing Hispanic populations across the United States, the Spanish language will be particularly relevant in areas of increased growth. According to Pew Researc h Center, states that have seen the Latino population grow most rapidly since 2000 include South Dakota, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, North Dakota, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. In fact, the need for Spanish in medicine is so extreme that some even argue that all United States physicians should speak Spanish, as discussed in an article from the AMA Journal of Ethics.RussianBelieve it or not, Russian is one of the  most searched languages for physicians after Spanish. The United States Census Bureau estimates that nearly 900,000 people in the United States speak Russian. While its not one of the most widely spoken languages in the United States, its still phenomenally useful for medicine in some places, largely because the population is more condensed than many other groups. In fact,  MLA Language Map Data Center  estimates that over 25% of the Russian-speaking population in the United States live in New York. Another nearly 17% live in California. Th erefore, if youre looking to practice medicine in these major hubs, Russian might be the language for you.ArabicArabic is also a commonly  searched language for physicians. With the  United States Census Bureau estimating that over 900,000 people in the United States speak Arabic, its no wonder so many people are searching for Arabic-speaking doctors. This is particularly true in regions with a large Arab population. Zocdoc found most searches came out of Illinois, Virginia and New York. However,  MLA Language Map Data Center  indicates that there are additional large population centers of Arabic speakers in California and Michigan.Plus, if youre interested in the historical foundations of medicine, Arabic could come in handy, since a lot of early research was done by Arab scholars.FrenchFrench is more widely spoken in the United States than you may think. The  United States Census Bureau estimates that over 1.2 million people in the United States speak French. Another nearly 740,000 speak French Creole.MLA Language Map Data Center  reports that the highest number of French speakers in the United States are located in New York, California and Louisiana. If youre looking to branch out and learn French Creole, this is most widely spoken in Florida and New York. However, French is so much more useful than the number of speakers within the United States alone would lead you to believe. This is a great language to look at if youre considering usefulness worldwide. World language resource Ethnologue estimates that there are over 76 million native French speakers in the world. However, an additional 208 million people speak French as a second language. Therefore, while you might not be able to connect with patients in their native language, speaking French could help you connect with many in their second language.Additionally, if youre interested in humanitarian work, French could come in handy. Doctors Without Borders originated in France, and French is widely spoken in countries where they work, such as  Belgium and Democratic Republic of Congo. So if youre looking to learn a useful language for medicine, consider these five languages.Your patients will thank you! The theory is not really all that fun but make it easier to read music. People who play the guitar have 2 choices to the style of music that they play, Tab music and sheet music. In drums, you will have the same choice between tabs and sheet music. You Have A Few Choices:To learn the rhythmic music theory and to  read sheet music or not to learn the theory and read tabsor do everything by ear.My friend's father was a professional drummer for more than 33 years, he had never taken a single music theory course or drumming class.  He was self-taught, and he did it before the internet and YouTube tutorials were available. However, limiting yourself in today's climate, to not learning musi c theory, is to deprive yourself of the basic fundamentals in learning. It also puts you at a disadvantage and will put a choke hold on what you can achieve. Because it is so basic, for a serious drummer this is similar to not knowing how to read, It will make you musically illiterate.Certainly, learning by ear is also important as it will allow you to fine-tune your skill and perfect false notes, counter-time and rhythm problems but all this is also working alongside the music theory.  You will know the meaning of an eighth note, a sixteenth note, a black, a white for example. The Difference Between The Drum Tab And Sheet MusicTab and sheet music are written quite. Differently, sheet music is recognised by most musicians no matter what instrument they play. Notes are written on a five horizontal line (the clef) which have equal spaces between them. Tab music is a form of simplified percussion notation. It uses a horizontal line to indicate the rhythm and vertical line to indicate wh ich drum should be used. Why Tab Music? This style of reading has its benefits for beginner drummers especially. As it shows you accurately which drum to play and what to do with that drum visually. Sheet music doesn’t have this benefit. Why Sheet Music? The benefit of sheet music is that this music is not just specialised to the drum. Once you learn this skill, you can read music for all instruments. Sheet music communicates metering, rhythm and harmony, this is great for when you are in a band and need to be more precise about the timing of what you are playing. The only things to learn are the symbols of the drums (bass drum, snare drum and other drums) and cymbals for the sound (hi-hat,) and their placement on the sheet.  Easy, right?Sheet music is a basic fundamental in music learning.
